The world's horticultural scientists are tackling head on the challenges of growing. crops in an ever populous and environmentally sensitive world. Challenges such as feeding the world's billions with diminishing land, water, fuel and fertiliser resources in a warming climate were hot topics at the 28th International Congress of Horticulture held in Portugal from August 22 to 27. Yet the 3,200 horticultural scientists and industry delegates from 110 countries gathered at the Lisbon Congress Centre were not fazed by doomsday scenarios. Rather they came to reveal the latest in biological and technological developments in horticultural, not only to offer solutions to chronic global problems, but also to assist the broader horticultural community to exploit new opportunities in expanding world markets while contributing to social well-being.
