Inelastic collisions of low-velocity electrons with rubidium iodide molecules leading to the production of single-charged rubidium ions through dissociative excitation are studied by the method of extended crossed beams with detection of optical radiation emitted from the interaction region. Eighty-two cross sections for electron energies of 100 eV are measured. Excitation function for transitions from 12 levels are determined. Possible mechanisms of the process under study in the low-energy region, and the contribution of cascade population for levels of the 4p55p configuration are discussed.
