The inverse problem of light scattering by a suspension of particles is analyzed. It is shown that the suspension parameters cannot be unambiguously determined from usually measured parameters of scattered light (the integrated scattering and width of the scattering indicatrix). In the general case, even the total mass of suspended molecules (the degree of pollution) cannot be determined from these parameters, because the attenuation of the light beam is related in a complicated manner to this mass. Only in a suspension of constant composition is a change in the attenuation of the light beam proportional to the concentration. The radius and concentration of particles can be determined from light scattering only in the case of the homogeneous suspension of particles of nearly spherical shape.
