Tropospheric Photochemistry: Recent Work and Unsolved Problems

Design and functional possibilities of the outdoor smog chamber “European Photoreactor” constructed in Valencia, Spain, in 1995 are briefly described. The chamber is intended for studies of mechanisms of photooxidation processes in a contaminated atmosphere using natural sunlight. The results of experiments on the effect of toluene additions to the cyclohexane/NO system on the ozone yield are reported, which differ from the results of laboratory studies using artificial light sources. The projects planned to be carried out on the photoreactor during the coming two years are listed.
