Eutrophication,is an important environmental problem originating from high nutrients with mostly domestic waste discharged in wastewaters,decreasing the dissolved oxygen and affecting the aerobic microorganisms in the rivers and lakes around the heavily industrialised regions.During the decomposition of proteins and other nitrogen-containing organic materials by microorganisms (nitrification),the algae populations in water increase and cover the water surface,thus impeding sunlight's penetration to the lower levels of water.Also,some industries and food factories of the developing countries discharge the nitrites directly into water.In this study,the removal of nitrite from artificially polluted water was investigated.Sawdust of poplar (Populous alba L.)and pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)species was used as treatment material.The nitrite solution,with a concentration of 30 mg L~(-1)in tap water was used as simulated waste sample,the result of this work showing that the maximum amount of nitrite removed was about 96% and 53%,respectively,as depending on the wood types used.
