Sawdust and Wood Chip Deposits in Near-Shore Lake Michigan Waters Near Manistique, Michigan

This report summarizes efforts in 1979-80 to define the nature and origin of the problems associated with sawdust and other wood waste deposits which blanket Lake Michigan beaches near Manistique, Michigan. The study included interviews with interested citizens, beach observations, collection of wind data for the study area, and most importantly, a SCUBA diving survey of the lake and river bottom in the study area. Results show no significant sawdust deposits in waters away from the Manistique River mouth. The area from Dutch Johns Point westward to Wiggins Point was surveyed.
