Primary open-angle glaucoma is defined as a progressive multifactorial optic neuropathy in which there is a characteristic acquired atrophy of the optic nerve and loss of retinal ganglion cells and their axons. Damage to the retinal nerve fiber layer usually is followed by changes in the optic nerve head shape and specific visual field defects. The detection of early structural changes at the optic disc is a key point in the diagnosis and follow-up of glaucoma. The evaluation of optic disc stereophotographs and planimetry is highly subjective and requires experienced evaluators
