摘要

SOUND BITES —whether written or spoken —are annoying. Here's one I especially loathe: china painting was practiced primarily by ladies of leisure during the late nineteenth century. It is true that such painting was practiced by ladies of leisure in the late nineteenth century, but it was also done by others during the same time period: men and women who used their skills to make a living; artists who hoped to explore new materials and new ways of working with those materials; and designers developing new patterns for mass production. In fact, artists around the world have been executing ovcrglaze painting on porcelain, so why suggest the ladies of the 1880s and 1890s were the sole practitioners?
