The seeds to what grew into perhaps the most significant betroleum event in the world,the Global Petroleum Show,were sewn in 1966 as a tribute to western Canada's oil patch and as a way to bolster static atten-dance figures at the Calgary Stampede.Unlike the Tulsa,Okla.,oil and gas trade show,the Calgary Petroleum Exhibition in 1966 was geared to the general public and billed as an educational event.Stampede attendance that year broke the 600,000 mark for the first time.More than a quarter-million people passed through a 30-foot-wide base to a flame-topped derrick that served as the entrance to 3.5 acres of exhibit space displaying 20 million worth of billing,transportation,and refining equipment.
