Chemical pre-treatment of metal surface before painting

Metal surface preparation before painting is an important factor which influences decorative and protective properties of paint coatings. Traditional and modern methods of the chemical pre-treatment have been presented. The characteristics of technologies and chemical agents have been given. It has been noted that some agents are harmful to health and environment and the reduction of the danger is necessary. The influence of steel surface pre-treatment on protective properties of paint coatings has been illustrated with diagrams, based on accelerated corrosion tests with neutral salt spray. These tests are main criteria for the selection of the protective paint systems required for proper anticorrosion protection. The results of accelerated corrosion tests performed in neutral salt spray and salt spray with addition of acetic acid have been compared in order to evaluate the pre-treatment methods of aluminium.
