Communication INCA: What does one know of resorting to nonconventional medicines in oncology? (L'INCa communique: Que sait-on du recours aux me?decines non conventionnelles en cance?rologie?)

Following WHO concern on development of medical systems integrating complementary and alternative medicine (CAM1) Human Sciences and Economy Department of the French Cancer National Institut (INCa) made in December 2005 an invitation to tender to qualitatively investigate how people suffering from cancer use CAM. Thanks to the latest surveys, it is already known that 40 to 80% of patients (depending on the nature of cancerous pathologies) are using CAM. Extent and consequences of this phenomenon have begun to be considered but one still do not know nor understand the nature, the reasons of CAM uses and their effects, if there are any. These are the questions that the Human Sciences and Economy Department, with the support of three social and human sciences research teams selected by it, wishes to answer in order to increase our knowledge of such a phenomenon.
