Governor Proposes Drilling in Expanded Area Off Virginia Coast

Virginia policymakers continue to implore the US Interior Department to hold an oil and gas lease sale off the state’s coast as soon as possible. Any such sale would mark a revival of exploration and production activity in the Atlantic Ocean after several decades of dormancy. The state’s governor, Bob McDonnell, has even taken his support for offshore drilling a step further by suggesting that a triangular, 2.9 million-acre area penciled in by the Bush Administration for a lease sale in 2011 should be expanded to encompass more hydrocarbon prospects.
