Exxon Applies Know-How to Drive Down Costs at Abu Dhabi Project

Exxon Mobil plans to shave billions off the cost of its Upper Zakum development in Abu Dhabi by using proprietary drilling technology and building artificial islands, a top executive told Oil Daily Tuesday. The US supermajor is still in the preliminary engineering phase of the Upper Zakum upgrade, which will boost capacity from 500,000 barrels per day to 750,000 b/d by 2015. But it has advanced with the construction of the first of four artificial islands that will house rigs for extended-reach drilling and processing facilities.
