US independent exploration and production companies will slash their capital spending by nearly 40% in 2009, with the bulk of the cuts occurring in the second half of the year, according to a survey conducted by investment firm Raymond James. Raymond James found that E&P capital spending for the year is expected to total $51.9 billion, down 38% from the $83.4 billion spent in 2008.
