CAG Tears into Petroleum Ministry for Slowdown in Pipeline Connectivity Projects

The CAG has criticized the tardy pace of the government in implementing the pipeline plans resulting in slowing down progress to the oil and gas segment. The CAG, in its latest report commented that the petroleum ministry's slip up in providing formal approvals to Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL), and providing authorizations without setting definite start and target date for completion of projects have resulted in entities either not commencing or completing the projects in time. Another finding of the CAG stated that the National Gas Highway's (NGH's) proposal leading to the NGG envisaging implementation of six pipelines through a fast track mechanism was also not considered. As of the present, out of 23 corridors identified for development during 2000-2009, only 7 segments have been completed, 6 are in different stages of construction and 10 segments (7908 kms) are yet to be taken up.
