A new project-planning methodology for declassifying drilling wastes can minimize the long-term liability associated with the disposal of contaminated drill cuttings and fluids.The resource management approach represents a project planning and integrated services process that combines drilling fluid design and waste treatment technologies with the aim of converting drill cuttings into beneficial by-products,thus eliminating disposal requirements.12 Consequently,operators can minimize and perhaps avoid the long-term liability issues related to hazardous waste disposal regulations.
