Dutch Court Reaches Decision in Shell Nigeria Oil Spill Case

Late last month, a Dutch civil court threw out four of five claims by Nigerian farmers and fishermen against Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) for damages caused by pipeline oil spills in the Niger River Delta region. The groundbreaking case placed a multi-national energy company on the defense in its own country for alleged negligence by a foreign subsidiary overseas. Both Shell and affected Nigerians are claiming some amount of victory in the court's decision.
