Response of hydroponically-grown tobacco and nightshade plants to the flooding of their root systems.

The responses of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Samsun) and nightshade (Solanum laciniatum) plants to the flooding of their root systems depended on the duration of the treatment. During the first 15 days of flooding, the growth of both species wasreduced along with the rates of photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration. Chlorophyll content was decreased while carotenoids content was increased. Flooding for 15 days killed tobacco plants, whereas the nightshade plants gradually adapted. Adaptation of nightshade plants to anaerobiosis was related to the formation of adventitious roots.
