Good adhesion between reinforcing textile and rubber is a prerequisite for effective reinforcement of rubber goods such as tires, hoses, transmission belts and conveyor belts. The most common solution to improving polymeric cord-rubber adhesion involves polymeric cord coatings with a mixture of resor-cinol-fonnaldehyde and latex (RPL) to obtain the desired adhesion upon rubber vulcanization. RFL coating is the best available solution and is cost-effective, but does not always offer the maximum adhesion required, and formaldehyde is highly toxic. The fumes released from the coated yarn may cause health and safety problems. The textile also becomes stiff and rigid as a result of the high solid load placed upon it. Since no other commercial products are available for the multi-billion dollar rubber goods market, toxic RFL coated textiles are pervasively used around the world.
