JAMES TOWER AND CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC ART

The exhibition mainly comprised work by James Tower (1919-1988), but interspersed, as a form of dialogue, were contemporary works by Caroline Achaintre, Gordon Baldwin, Ken Eastman, Edith Garcia, Nicholas Lees, and Martin Smith. There is an instant feeling of familiarity about Tower's work. It embodies a great many influences and is a part of a substantial thread of British ceramics, but one that risks getting lost. His asymmetric forms and bold, very free, scratchy designs have the look of the Swedish industrial ceramic designs of Stig Lindberg or of Eric Ravilious' work for Midwinter, but Tower's work is entirely studio ceramics and largely handbuilt.
