The Use of Antidepressants in Pregnancy: Focus on Maternal Risks

Twenty percent of reproductive-age women have depression, and it is often not fully diagnosed or treated in pregnant women. This is usually due to the concern of potential fetal harm that could be caused from exposure to antidepressants. This purpose of this review was to provide an overview of the evidence surrounding "maternal risk" and to determine the risk-to-benefit ratio of these medications, with a particular focus on maternal risks related to depression and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).
