Possibilities of synthesizing cermet material in the Zn-Ni-SnO_2 system are investigated experimentally. The cermet is produced by direct synthesis from compacted specimens by the SHS compaction method. The optimal conditions of the process are determined. The product is monolithic cylindrical blocks consisting of a ZnO-based dense outer layer and electrically conductive central part in which the metal phase is protected by a chemically and thermally stable Zn_2SnO_4-based phase. It is shown that the use of coarsely divided nickel oxide as the initial reagent makes possible a considerable reduction of the magnitude of electrical resistivity due to the formation in it of structural characteristics in the form of particles having a metal shell which are oriented perpendicular to the compaction axis. Properties of the products obtained (structure, phase and chemical compositions, electrical conductivity, heat resistance, corrosion resistance) are investigated.
