For the last three years Paul McAllister, Stephen Parry, Jim Gladwin, David Scott and I have been firing the 68 cubic feet anagama kiln built in 1998 by Izumihara Masanobu. The kiln is sited in the grounds of Wysing Arts near Cambridge. Following our initial firings we have been carrying out research into clay bodies that are capable of utilising the atmospheres generated through a protracted wood-firing. Tests with pre-formulated commercial clay bodies did not achieve the surfaces we were looking for.
