摘要

Valeria Nascimento's childhood was spent on a Portuguese-style quinta, or farm, in Brazil. She remembers playing barefoot in the red oxide-tinted soil using pebbles as toys and moulding raw materials into mud pies. Born in the central Brazilian state of Goias she recalls a green landscape covered with short, distorted trees. Living on the family farm until she was ten, she became expert at climbing mango and guava trees, which grew on her family's land. Later, attracted to precise shapes and patterns, she trained as an architect, b t was always fascinated by the primitive and indigenous art of her home country Today in her well-ordered studio Teddington, London, the colours, lines and images of her youth influence her ceramic art: clean, structured plaques sit alongside delicate, often abstract shapes reminiscent of giant leaves or flowers; cubed wall installations vie with spirals and concentric circles.
