ICAAEA CONFERENCE

Diversity emerged as the most significant impression of my visit to China for the ICAAEA conference. A wide range of international speakers introduced various perspectives in papers that were decidedly contemporary, with a marked absence of historical emphasis. This was fuelled, on one level, by papers founded in the theoretical research emerging from practice-based PhD research, an area that happily appears to be expanding globally within ceramics. Evidence of this was reinforced by, amongst others, my own presentation looking at ceramic practice and the digital interface. Australian ceramist Ruth Park took a similar academic approach when discussing her recent research around issues of identity through the human body in ceramic.
