摘要

The world of craft is changing, course fees are rising, studio rents are increasing, and ceramics facilities are being lost from education. It's a problem that not many of us 'potters' need reminding of, but it is a situation that needs creative solutions. I'm not suggesting that this is the ointment for all of our sores, but it may be a step on the road to recovery. Turning Earth is a new ceramics studio model for the UK. Its founder, Tallie Maughan, who's also an amateur potter, spotted its potential in the States. The studio will be run a bit like a gym: members pay a monthly membership, and have up to fifteen hours a week open access to the studio. Like a gym, the studio will be kitted out with all the necessary equipment, which will be maintained and watched over by a team of qualified professionals. The model suits amateur and early career ceramists, who are not making full-time and require flexible access to a studio. In some cases, Turning Earth will be a stepping-stone, easing the leap from course or college to practice. With 'mentors' and technicians available on hand, and equipment already in place, you can come in and get started right away.
