Irrigation System Readjustment Project in Romania

Romania, located in the Central Eastern part of Europe, benefits from all kinds of relief forms; a large plain in the southern and western parts of the Country, high mountains crossing the country from North to South and a high plateau in the Center.The total land area of Romania is 23,9 million hectares; of which approximately 10 million hectares are arable. After the revolution in December 1989, the new Government introduced the land reform and privatization programme. According to the privatization land law issued in 1991, 80% of the land will be returned to the private farmers. The remaining 20% will be owned by agricultural joint stock companies. Consequently, all former cooperative farms are divided between private farmers, with the average farm ranging between 1 and 6 hectares.
