On the face of it, the more pixels that make up an image the better, but this is a complex subject and there is a little more to it. GH Thomson, in October's Journal (Are You 'Lens Limited'?, vol 152, no 8, p498), points out that, in many instances, it is the lens, rather than the sensor, that limits the sharpness of the image, and it's certainly easy enough to demonstrate that a great piece of glass on a normal camera will produce better images than poor glass on a top-notch model.
