I wake early feeling rested. Despite having enjoyed my former existence working for more years than I care to remember in various government departments, there is something liberating about being off the relentless treadmill that demands body and mind to be prematurely on duty each day. I decide to go for a swim. As usual, the pool is quiet at this time of day, with only a few fellow somnambulists for company As I slip into the still cool water and start to swim, my body is soon in 'automatic pilot' mode. This frees my mind to contemplate the day ahead. Pool time is always good thinking time. I have been reading The Great Japan Exhibition of 1900, and my mind is buzzing with images of the wonderful oriental artefacts which have been such an influence on my ceramic work.
