摘要

Lara Scobie hates boats. She physically winces at the mention of the word 'boat' when I am interviewing her at her studio in The Adam Pottery, Edinburgh. This may seem somewhat surprising since for about half of her twenty-year professional career working with clay, she made boats. Actually, boating is a good analogy for the development of many creative careers. Some set a course from the moment they leave college, and although they trim their sails they stay true to the bearing; others find themselves tacking. Scobie seems to be on a second long and rewarding tack. Over coffee in her shared studio I tried to discover just why she hates boats.
