The spread in the exponent m in the fatigue-curve equation has been examined for specimens similar in design and made from typical aviation materials, which are the most commonly encountered load-bearing components involving stress concentrators in aircraft: holes and lugs. A particular material and stress concentrator chosen in examining the spread of m has been related to the material and form of load-bearing elements in aircraft whose failure under working conditions is most likely or which may lead to emergencies or catastrophic consequences.
