TAKING A STAND

Executed in Stephen Dixon's inimitable style, with applied motifs referencing political and historical themes, these three portrait busts depict Karl von Ossietzky (1889-1938), Aung San Suu Kyi (b.1945), and Liu Xiaobo (b.1955). Each was a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize while imprisoned for their political activities. Pacifist and democrat Karl von Ossietzky spoke out against the rise of the Nazi party. He was arrested for treason in 1933 and sent to a concentration camp; when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1936, he was not allowed to accept it.
