Physiological and pathological bone remodelling [Le remodelage osseux normal et pathologique]

Physiological bone remodelling is responsible for bone resorption and bone formation. It is necessary to maintain skeletal integrity and mineral homeostasis. Bone remodelling requires several cellular types present in the ? bone remodelling compartment ? such as osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes. Bone remodelling is tightly coordinated by multiple hormonal and local factors that contribute to maintain a balance between bone resorption and formation. This review discusses the different cellular mechanism involved in bone remodelling and describes the pathophysiological conditions leading to an imbalance in cellular activities which often contributes to bone diseases.
