I fit hadn't been for some outside influence, I probably would not have bought a Boss 302. This is to say nothing about the merits of the car. I was a 1970s sports-car guy who graduated into Japanese and European coupes and then BMWs in particular. I like my cars to be able to corner and stop and take occasional track use without flinching. Until recently, that pretty much excluded the off-the-shelf Mustang. But then I was given a chance to drive the 2012 Boss 302. For two weeks, from coast to coast. My son, the executive editor of this magazine, had managed this as an assignment two summers ago while freelancing for Popular Mechanics. We drove from Manhattan to Laguna Seca with a considerable amount of extra mileage in between, and I loved every minute of it. On the second day, just outside Watkins Glen, we removed the plates that quiet down the factory side pipes and set the adjustable shocks to full firm. They stayed that way for the rest of the trip. Something about the car just hit me right.
