摘要

The title, Ann Stokes: Artists' Potter, reveals much about the potter and the way she is perceived. Ann Stokes stated making pots in the 1960s but her work has been little seen or appreciated by studio potters or generally within the craft world. This is partly because she has sold privately from her home - her Christmas sales are legendary - and partly because her work has been admired by artists and writers. They like its unsophisticated qualities and many collect it in great quantities. Discerning critics, such as Grey Gowrie, is one such admirer; he applauds her ceramics while pointing out that, although is not widely known, it is owned by many 'arbiters of taste'. These include William Coldstream, Richard Wollheim, John Golding and David Sylvester.
