The Japan Spent Catalyst Recovering Association reports that the value of Japanese non-ferrous metal recycling rose by 130 percent to Yen 154B in FY 2006 (Table 1). Recovery from spent catalysts increased by 15 percent to Yen 54.4B and accounted for 35 percent of the total. Recovery from other products rose by 430 percent to Yen 99.6B. Part of this increase is attributed to the inclusion of data for recycling of precious metals from more non-catalyst products - electronics, dental alloys and jewellery - in FY 2006. The value of Japanese recycling of rare metals fell by 18 percent to Yen 10.2B in FY 2006 (Table 2). Gallium is recovered from defective products and scrap generated in the production of GaAs and GaP compound semiconductor alloys. Recovery rose by 30 percent in terms of volume to 6.5t in FY 2006 and by 34 percent in terms of value to Yen 280M.
