Recycling and waste minimization are key words for sustainable development in the next century. The Japanese government began development of a recycling technology for non-ferrous metals in 1993, with the intention of creating a new recycling oriented society in Japan. The project team was funded through NEDO (the New Energy and Industrial Development Organization) and CEM (the Center of Eco-Mining), and 8 universities and 6 companies in the private sectors joined the project.
