TITANIUM METAL: DOWNTURN IN JAPANESE SECTOR IN FIRST THREE-QUARTERS OF 2003

Japanese shipments of titanium sponge fell by nearly 10 percent in 2002, largely due to lower exports to the USA in the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Exports approximately halved from 10,779t in 2001 to 5,851 tin 2002, and rose by just 5 percent year-on-year to 4,720t in January to September 2003. Domestic shipments of titanium sponge fell by 28 percent year-on-year to 9,351t in January to September 2003. Domestic output showed a similar trend, dropping from 25,199t in 2002 to 14,468t in the first three-quarters of 2003.
