摘要

I WAS 14 WHEN I DESIGNED MY RACETRACK. I was given permission to use a corner of one of the fields on our farm, suitably far from the house so that the buzzing of my go kart wouldn't be heard. For days, I pored over track diagrams. Then I staked out my design. One of our farmers ran the bulldozer. We scraped off about six inches of grass and topsoil, creating a short straight and a few curves. It looked beautiful, but halfway through my first lap, I knew something was wrong. The straight was too short the turns too, tight and the earth, too soft, for the kart to build up any speed. My torque-less Westbend was made for pavement, not dirt. I had dreamed of the Nurburgring and Spa's daunting Eau Rouge, but all I could do was putt along. Worse, when my mother tried a few laps, a wheel dug in, and she flipped. It rained soon afterward, and deep ruts formed because I hadn't considered any drainage. Then when things dried out, weeds sprouted.
