A sense of touch

The sense of touch plays a vital part in exploring and understanding pottery, yet there are few potters who set out deliberately to encourage tactile exploration. For Anna Whitehouse that characteristic is central to her investigations. She roots this interest in a university experience, when she responded to a project titled 'Pick me up'. Questioning what it was that drove her to naturally gather pebbles on a beach led to deeper enquiry into tactile response, and into the communication with nature which many people relate to. Her work is certainly inspired by natural form, the study of which helps her develop ideas that engage her own creative impulse.
