Ever since Joe Engelberger's first Unimate robot was powered up to tend a die cast machine in a General Motors plant, robots have been put to work in Three D jobs (dirty, dull or dangerous, or a combination of the three), allowing workers a chance to take on more comfortable employment opportunities. Spot and arc welding, machine tending, die casting, metal forming, router trimming, painting, packaging and palletizing are a few of the Three D processes that are being done by robots today.
