Side illumination for internal limiting membrane peeling without staining in macular surgery.

Internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling has become a standard maneuver in macular hole surgery and also has been frequently considered in diabetic macular edema, retinal detachment with proliferative vitreoretinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. The use of intraocular dyes has become a useful adjunct in macular surgery. Colored appearance and ability to differentiate ocular tissues and ILM are the major advantages. Routinely, membrane blue, indocyanine green, or infracyanine green are used to stain semitransparent ILM. However, there are many controversial reports in vitro and in vivo about the toxicity and safety of membrane blue and indocyanine green.
