A novel silver(I) inorganic polymer {[Ag-4(mu-4,4'-bipy)(3)(mu-salicylate)(2)(salicylate)H2O](2)center dot 2C(2)H(5)OH} (n) 1 was synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. X-ray crystallography shows it is a kind of inorganic polymer and forms a trinuclear silver cluster. The polymeric unit consists of two portions which are centrally symmetric. Each asymmetric group comprises four Ag(I) atoms, three 4,4'-bipy molecules, three salicylate anions and one H2O molecule. The DNA-binding properties of the Ag(I) polymer were investigated by using electronic absorption spectroscopy, ethidium bromide-DNA displacement experiments and viscosity measurements. The experimental results suggest that the Ag(I) polymer binds to DNA in an intercalation mode. The antioxidant activity of the Ag(I) polymer was determined by the superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging method in vitro, which indicate that it is a scavenger for OH center dot and O (2) (-center dot) radicals.
