Combining ability analysis for yield and yield contributing component traits in sorghum was carried out during 2006-07 in diallel fashion excluding reciprocals. The general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sea) variances were significant for all the traits except panicle girth, indicating the importance of both additive and non-additive genetic components. However, preponderance of additive gene action was observed for days to 50% flowering, plant height, number of primaries per panicle, panicle length and fodder yield, whereas non-additive gene action was of greater importance for number of leaves per plant, number of secondaries per panicle, panicle weight and grain yield per plant. AKR-426-2 x ICS-70B and AKMS-30B were superior over the parents based on per se performance and gca effects. The cross combination AKR-426-2 x ICS-70B followed by AKR-426-2 x AKMS-30B and AKR-436 x ICS-70B was the best specific combiner for grain yield.
