Standardization of surface disinfectants for sterilization of explants in carnation.

Shoot tips of carnation were immersed in various concentrations of mercuric chloride (0.05, 0.10, 0.20 and 0.25%) or ethanol (70, 80 and 90%) for 3 minutes and 45 seconds, respectively, or pre-treated with Bavistin [carbendazim] (0.1%) and streptomycin (0.1%) for 3 minutes each, then immersed in mercuric chloride (0.1%) or ethanol (80%) for surface sterilization. The highest level of contamination (81.4%) and lowest percentage of survival (15.6%) were recorded for the control, whereas the lowest percentage of contamination (15.5%) and highest percentage of survival (84.6%) were registered for explants pre-treated with Bavistin and streptomycin, then immersed in mercuric chloride solution.
