Mid parental gca - a better prediction of hybrid performance in rabi sorghum.

Combining ability analysis was conducted for yield components in rabi sorghum by employing diallel analysis in Andhra Pradesh, India, during the 2003 rabi season. The relationship between mean of hybrid, general combining ability (gca) status of parents and specific combining ability (sca) effect of crosses was examined. Majority of the high yielding crosses had atleast one good general combiner and average gca effect of both the parents showed significant positive relationship with yield. In most of the crosses, there was no perfect correspondence between per se yield and sca effect, rather it was moderate sca with one general combiner which resulted in high mean.
