IN 1799 THE SON OF A North Carolina farmer skipped Sunday school in favour of a day fishing. But 12-year-old Conrad Reed secured a bigger catch when he stumbled upon a large gold nugget which tipped the scales at 17 pounds. Little did the Reed family know that the nugget, which was employed as a doorstop for three years, would signal the first commercial gold find in the United States.
