As is often the case in this space, I am going to say some things herein that will probably make some people uncomfortable. Thus, as is also often the case, I will start by pre-empting the interpretation that I am criticizing those whom I am not.What follows is a criticism of the social structures within which science-and, particularly, science with great perceived potential to improve the human condition in the foreseeable future-is pursued. It is not a criticism of the scientists who work within those structures. What structures? Well, as with so many things in life it all comes down, ultimately, to money.
