As the development of second generation feedstocks and technologies is lagging significantly behind, sugar remains one of the most widely used substrates for the production of renewable chemicals worldwide. It is obviously the dominant feedstock in major producing regions such as South America and Asia, but is also deployed in North America and Europe, if to a lesser extent.
