SHIFTS IN RANKING OF TOP LYSINE EXPORTERS REVEAL ASIAN STRENGTH

The trading landscape of lysine has undergone some changes in 2013, with some shifts in the ranking of the top exporters. Asian players have recorded increases in exports while traditional American and European origins saw their shipments decline. Overall, export volumes of the Top 10 groups of exporters fell year-onyear in 2013 by over 6%. Mainly driven by feed applications, the global lysine market continued to expand throughout 2013. Global production capacity for the essential amino acid rose by 190,000 tonnes to 2.7 mln tonnes, an increase of 7.5% on the year. Total capacity expansion was almost equally split between North America and Asia, with one single company being responsible for the entire rise. Cheil Jedang upped its production capacity at its existing plant in Shandong province, China, by 90,000 tonnes to a total of 170,000, while it opened a new 100,000 tonnes per year plant in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Both facilities use maize as their feedstock.
